Peoria Ill youth hockey royalty devastated after second family death in 2 days

Two of 3 Olson family brothers separated in age by 8 years but sharing the same birth date died 24 hours apart this past weekend.

Joe Olson had a heart attack two weeks ago, was taken off life support, and died late Friday night at age 60. The family was gathered in Peoria on Saturday afternoon when Ric Olson, 68, collapsed from a heart attack and died. “They had the same birthday — both born on the same day, different years,” Mike Olson said. “That is so odd that they died from the same thing, virtually on the same day.

“We are devastated,” said Mike Olson, the oldest of the three brothers whose father, Mark Olson, is one of the founding fathers of hockey in Peoria. “I went to bed on Friday night with two brothers, and I went to bed on Saturday night with none.”

The Olson family is local hockey royalty, their family tree planted firmly among the roots of hockey in central Illinois.
